The Wellington-born lad started his career with non-league local side Lilleshell Iron Works followed by a move Wellington Town before securing his professional contract with Aston Villa and moving to the Villains in 1904. Hampton led the attacking line for the Claret and Blues for most of his time at the club. Playing as the centre forward, 'Happy' as he was nicknamed finished as the top scorer of the division on one occasion.
